At teams, playing 3NT. Lead ♠K.

4 3

K 3 2

J 6 5 4

Q 10 3 2

A 2

A Q 4

A K 7 2

A J 9 7

Plan the play

Solution:

Take the ♠A on the second round.

Cash the ♦A and ♦K.

If the ♦Q is a doubleton you don't need the finesse.

If the ♦Q doesn't fall, go to table with the ♥K.

Run the ♣10, and, if it holds, the ♣Q, to eventually capture the ♣K.

If you begin with the finesse, and it's wrong, you lose the ♣K and 4 ♠ tricks.

This was the West hand:

♠ K Q J 9 7 ♥ 8 7 6 ♦ 9 8 3 ♣ K 4

Moral: increase your chances by testing the split before the finesse.
